We choose a topic for each month, which usually provides good inspiration and some interesting results. 

The main purpose of our group is not to teach how to write or to correct punctuation, spelling and so on, but to help, support and encourage each other in our writing. For most of us, our writing is a lifelong passion. Although one of our members is a published author, none of us has aspirations to write the next blockbuster or take the world by storm.

Our format is to send via e mail our pieces to each other a week or so before the meeting, to enable us to read through them and prepare a critique ready for our meeting, when we discuss our submissions. This proves to be very helpful and supportive as we talk through each piece, with usually a lot of laughter along the way, but we do also discuss the more serious side of things, so it is a happy mix that works for us all.

We feel that this very special dynamic can only work with keeping the group small, which is why we have kept the membership to ten at the very most. However we do currently have three vacancies. To give you a brief history of how I came to be the convenor, I joined the group many years ago having been encouraged by local author Jill Treseder. Jill and I met, when the Flavel first opened, at a writing course; the Inventive Pen, by Totnes writer Anna Lunk. Having had a lifelong love of writing - just for pleasure - I was delighted to join this group and was very disappointed when Anna gave it up after a couple of years.

It is due to Jill's help and encouragement that, several years later, I joined the u3a Writing Group, then run by Lindsay Ellwood. When Lindsay retired, I took over as I enjoyed our sessions so much and didn't want it to end. I am happy to be the convenor of such a fine group of writers and consider myself very lucky indeed to be a part of this very rewarding group.
