The geology group has been going for about 15 years, seven under the leadership of Tim Freeman. Attendance at talks is often around 20 -25 people. In the winter we meet in the Flavel Centre usually on the second wednesday of each month. Flavel based sessions cost £2pp. For part of the summer we do trips to see rocks or fossils or places of interest. When you see a landscape there are questions that should arise: Why is Torbay a bay? Why is the water in Dartmouth so deep? Why is Blackpool Sands so pretty? All these questions relate to the rocks under your feet and we answer such questions in this group. A deeper understanding of the landscape is our objective.

The world we live in has an astonishing record of time in its fossils. Handling fossls is great fun and usually each session Tim will bring in something from his collection at home and we learn its history, when was it formed and where.

Our recent trips have included the caves at Buckfastleigh where we were able to see and hold bones found there from 120,000 years ago. These included hippo bones, yes hippos lived in Devon not that long ago. We also did a trip recently to Dorset staying one night and seeing some very impressive teeth (see photo below).

Note: If you find parking difficult try parking at the top of town and walking down (or using the bus which is every 30 mins). After the session I can usually run a few people up the hill back to their cars as I am going that way anyway.
